Vision for the workshop

Prof Don Schauder
Chair of Monash CCNR, Melbourne, Australia

Prof Schauder gave a vision for the workshop, arrived at in consultation with Prof Ron Weber, Dean of the Faculty of IT, and Dr Jacques Steyn. He explained the relevance to the current DI initiative of CCNR’s record as a leader in Community Informatics Research. He also sketched the ever-strengthening relationship of Monash and IITB. The IITB DIL had pioneered peer-to-peer learning models in Development Informatics, both at the technical and social levels – especially in relation to agriculture in rural areas. A key goal for the Workshop was that projects with peer-to-peer features would be identified. He indicated two which could be considered, both aimed primarily at youth: a project associated with the FIFA World Cup to be held in South Africa in 2010, and a project proposed by Steve Vosloo in which young people use a digital platform to help analyse and solve personal problems, e.g. in relation to HIV/AIDS.
